Saybrook Methodist Church

The opportunities of work and missions at the Saybrook Methodist Church by their corresponding committees or group.

Community Outreach

Our church welcomes other groups to use the shelters and the fellowship that can be found within our church structure. We are able to provide a place to meet and support to these groups: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, two different AA groups, and periodic used by the staff and students of St. John’s school.

Once a month we host a Free Community Dinner and a Free Community Breakfast. These serve as an opportunity for friends and community to gather over meals together. These meals are a gift to those attending but donations are welcomed to help support these efforts.

In the fall we collect school supplies to assist the schools and students in our community. The items have been donated in a variety of school settings.

The Membership Committee

Purpose/Goal: to serve in keeping the church membership connected in a number of ways with outreach events serving groups and individuals. This group may be seen planning activities for the church family, sending cards, fellowship pot-luck dinners, transportation and visiting the sick and shut-ins. This group coordinates the following events:

  • Valentines & Goodies for college students and military personnel connected to the church family.
  • Birthday Party pot-luck: tables honoring the 12 months.
  • Summer Family Outing: Planning activities for everyone to enjoy together such as attending special functions.
  • Summer Movie Night: Outdoor family movie, popcorn, snacks & Fun!
  • Thankful Basket for Thanksgiving: Home-made soup and goodies delivered to those who might need to know they are cared for.
  • Christmas Caroling: Caroling to church shut-ins and nursing homes and sharing together in fellowship and food after caroling.

The Missions Committee

Purpose/Goal: To support local, national, and world-wide mission efforts in sharing the saving message of God’s Love

  • Missionary Support: Selecting mission organizations at local, community, national, and international to assist with financial support and prayer support. Includes but not limited to : El Sembrador, Honduras
  • Funeral Dinner: Providing a meal and a place for fellowship following funerals.
  • Bread for the World: Celebrated on World Communion Sunday, a table of various home-made breads are presented and donations for the bread go to the Bread for the World organization
  • Operation Christmas Child: Samaritan’s Purse mission project for sharing God’s love to children around the world. Funds’ are raised our Christmas in July bake sale and once a month noisy change offering. We join together in packing parties to create gifed filled shoeboxes representing God’s Love.
  • Pie Auction: is a fun activity where yummy pies are auctioned off to help financial support the work of the Missions
  • Swiss Steak Dinner: An Annual dinner event in October that serves a full Swiss Steak dinner and home-made pies. The funds from the dinner goes to support the Missions of the church.
  • Christmas Families and Easter Families: Provide opportunities to help families in need within our area. Gifts for family members and a meal are provided to families that are recommended by the Catholic Charities organization.

The Education Committee

Purpose/Goal: To provide a structure to plan educational activities for the church family and reaching out into the community with opportunities to share our faith in God.

  • Children’s Church: Children participate in age appropriate activities in a group setting following the children’s message in the morning worship. Biblical lessons, crafts, snacks, and time for fellowship and fun.
  • Adult Studies: Sunday School Classes of varying ages held prior to worship on Sunday. Bible Studies planned throughout the year on various topics.
  • Easter Egg Hunt: Community families are invited to join us for the egg hunt, partake in a children’s Easter lesson, and a time of fellowship and fun.
  • Vacation Bible School: A week long event with lessons, music, hands-on activities, and games to share God’s Love with our church children and those in our community.
  • Summer Praise Fest: Hours of praise music presented in our backyard by local vocal and instrumental musicians. Craft vendors are invited and snacks foods are available.
  • Trunk or Treat: An October Event in our parking lot with Trunks decorated in Biblical themes and treats to highlight the Biblical Stories.
  • Advent Storytelling Worship: A Sunday in December where the Education Team take over morning worship and present the story of Christmas and Advent through drama and music.

Worship & Music Committee

Purpose/Goal: This committee works with the pastor to plan the structure and music aspects of our worship services.

The Worship & Music committee organizes the different aspects of each worship service and plan for special services from World Communion, to the periods of Lent/Easter and Advent/Christmas. They recruit members to participate in worship in roles including readers, ushers, musical leaders/performers, and the Children’s message. Weekly summer lakeside services at the Saybrook Township Park are a unique worship experience that allows us to meet in God’s outdoor sanctuary in the summer. Each Wednesday evening we have a time of praise, music, and message. Worship on Wednesday worship service are also oversaw by this committee.

Endowment Committee

Purpose/Goal: This group works to sustain and use our endowment funds. They are able to use these funds when emergency situations arise and fit with the guidelines for endowment funds.

Marketing Team

Purpose/Goal: This group is tasked with sharing the work of the church within its members and to the community and the world beyond. The marketing team oversees, the church’s website, outdoor digital sign, newspaper articles about church events, the church’s Facebook and YouTube accounts.

Methodist Women’s Circle

Purpose/Goal: This group provides the opportunity for women’s fellowship, study, and support of selected mission projects.

Men’s Group

Purpose/Goal: This group provides the opportunity for men’s fellowship, study, and support of each other, while providing assistance among the different missions projects of the church.

Historians

Purpose/Goal: This group helps the history of the church to stay alive and to be restored. This group works to preserve church records, collect symbols and photos of events as they progress through the years and history of the church.
